Research Your Options Prior to Moving Abroad

I'm graduating from college with a degree in foreign languages and a minor in anthropology. My husband holds a degree in pedagogy and education. How can we find employment in Costa Rica as teachers or in related careers? – Katie, Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA

Costa Rica has more Americans per capita than any other country outside the U.S. due to its reasonable climate, cost of living, pace of life and safety. Before moving, check out "The Golden Door to Retirement and Living in Costa Rica" (Costa Rica Books, 2000) by Christopher Howard. Although you're likely far from retirement age, you'll find this book useful for its information on securing employment and legal residency there, and embassy and consulate addresses. Additionally, you may want to visit TeachAbroad.com, which lists job openings for teachers in different countries. When we did a search on Costa Rica, 10 jobs were listed.

Your next step is to make sure you really want to live in Costa Rica, so spend some time as a visitor. Follow up on job opportunities and see what kind of steps you'd need to take to get settled in. If you like it there, try a six-month trial period.
