How to Strengthen Relations With Co-Workers Overseas

I'm based in the U.K. and my boss and four other team members are in Canada. An Abundance of Positive Feedback Is Uncommon

I read your column last week and was intrigued by what Jon from Paris said about never receiving feedback or indication about his performance. I'm in the opposite situation. My boss seems to compliment me on everything I do. It's getting hard for me to determine if he's sincere. Is there anything I can do?  – read answer

Dream Job, Nightmare Boss

I recently interviewed with a hot-shot company in my industry for a job that would put me in a fast track to the top of my field. I interviewed with two managers to whom I would report directly and they're eager to bring me aboard. However, when I met with the head of the organization, I endured the most toxic interview one could imagine. I'm sure it was meant to be one of those "stress" interviews, but now I'm having second thoughts about this employer. Afterwards, one of the managers called to tell me that I shouldn't let this person influence my decision to join the organization, that he was a manic-depressive, that I wouldn't have much contact with him and that he was being "isolated" from the rest of the staff. I'm used to high-stress work environments and can take a lot of guff, but this seems weird. Still, this job would be great for my career. They've made me an attractive offer. What should I do?  – read answer

Alternatives to Tattling on a Lax Co-Worker

I work closely with another person -- we're a team responsible for our work together. I'm a generous sort and my partner takes advantage of this. I do over 70% of the work, while she does only the rest. I've tried to raise this issue with her several times in a pleasant way, but I'm getting nowhere. I hate to report to my boss about this problem -- that's not my style. Is there an alternative? – read answer

She knows nothing about the industry or how a company is run. How can I maintain my sanity and keep my job without getting involved in the family affairs? – read answer

Dinner With Your Boss Is More Than a Social Event

I was told that I'm being transferred to another department and the department head invited my spouse and me to dinner to get to know us better. I'm concerned since my spouse is extremely shy and doesn't like social functions. I could make excuses and not bring my spouse, but I think this wouldn't look good. I don't want my spouse to just sit there and be uncomfortable either. What should I do? – read answer

Get a Fresh Start with New Subordinates

I was recently hired as a manager of an information-technology department with about 15 people working for me. I've looked at the personnel files of my staff and noticed that their performance reviews, for the most part, haven't been very positive for the past few years. This concerns me and I'm not sure what to do. My inclination is to ignore the reviews, but I'm afraid if I do, my superiors will judge me as arrogant and think that I feel I know more than my predecessor. What should I do? – read answer
