I have an advanced degree, and after two years of sitting at a desk, I realize that what I most want to do is travel in my next job. What do you think I should try?

Daniel's advice

It's nice to hear from someone who considers travel a desirable option. The obvious answer to your question is to suggest the tourism industry as one possibility. While tourism has clearly suffered in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, it seems that it's rebounding some in recent months. If you enjoy being around people, you might consider becoming a tour operator or working on a cruise ship. Hotel chains with properties around the globe might be another good option.

In addition to tourism, the armed forces is an avenue to consider. If that isn't what you're looking for, consider a job in sales or marketing, as travel often is a requirement.

As the world becomes smaller due to rapid, affordable communication networks, globalization and the reduced cost of air travel, more jobs offer the possibility of travel. If your advanced degree and abilities are in a universal field, such as finance or computer technology, look for ways to make travel part of your next job description.
