I currently have a well-paying job but have really grown to hate it. I was working from home for a couple of years and just recently started back in the office, which opened my eyes. I think that I didn't see how unhappy I was until I had to come back into the office environment. I really want to start my own non-medical home-care business but I am hesitant. I make more money than my husband and I also cover the benefits since his company doesn't offer them. Not sure if I should take the risk and start my own business or stay where I am. Help!

Daniel's advice

It’s hard to work at a job you that you hate for any length of time. However, economic realities are what they are, and as the primary money maker in your household, it’s probably not too wise to chuck it all and hope that you can get a new business off the ground without somehow first testing the waters to know how if your idea will be welcomed in the market place. We’re big believers in pursuing the dream, but know how easily it can turn into a nightmare if you haven’t done some due diligence first.

It seems a reasonable thought to try to change the conditions of your current job back to being home based. Perhaps you can make a proposal to your employer that would allow you to return to your former arrangement. If not, you will probably want to find a way to get your business going on a part-time basis (with some guarantee of monthly income) before you leave your current position. Perhaps if there is real potential and you want to try this new venture enough, your husband or a friend (who only wants to work part time) could help you get it off the ground until the time it’s profitable enough to cover your health insurance and bills. You could then make your move with the assurance that you wouldn’t be risking economic ruin for your family.
