Prior to applying for my first job as a trainee technical writer in June, I'd like to write an article for publication in a professional journal. I plan to use the piece as a marketing tool in my job search. What type of article should I write?

Daniel's advice

The best way to get started in a writing career is to write about a topic that holds great interest to others (in this case prospective employers) and yourself. Writers tend to be more thorough and ask better questions when they care about the subject matter. Identify some technical aspects of your new field that intrigue you and you think will excite potential employers and readers.

Next, approach several potential employers and find a common subject (from the list you've already generated) that would be of interest to them. Ask if you can interview them for the story. (Being selected to contribute will make them feel special.) Be sure to tell them that you'll send them a copy of the article as soon as it's complete.
