I am a senior in high school. I have to start making choices on what courses I want to pursue in university and what the career will be for my future.

I have always been told that business is a very boring category. I want to know if it is true. I asked people if marketing is interesting, but they say that marketing in Canada can't get me anywhere.

So I just want some advice on the different jobs in business. I am the person who likes to do something different all the time, which means I don't like accounting. Can anyone help me out with my questions? Thank you!

Daniel's advice

We applaud your foresight in wanting to make a plan now about what might be a good choice for you to pursue as a college major and then career, but don’t see this as something that should be carved in stone quite yet. The good news is that you are in the enviable position of having the time (and exposure) to take classes that are of interest to you over the next several years at your university that will allow you to explore different possibilities, not only in terms of a college degree but also in terms of career options.

From our observations, it’s pretty much a myth to assume that entering college freshman know exactly what classes they want to take in their four years in college, and once those classes are under their belt will have developed a blueprint of how their career will go. Rarely works that way for the majority of folks. It’s much more reasonable to think that the first couple of years of college are a time for sampling a variety of different options to see what really sparks an interest and ignites enthusiasm. Once this interest and enthusiasm takes hold, the college major becomes clearer, courses can become much more directed to that end, and ultimately the kind of first job you want will become evident.

We also wonder at your comments about the “business category. It doesn’t sound like this is really something that excites you, but is more of a fallback option – it’s like you understand you are supposed to say that you are majoring in something and since nothing else has appeared on the horizon, you will go with “business. Your comments that you’ve been told it’s boring and won’t get you anywhere, wouldn’t make us want to jump at this as a career option either. (Remember that old saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure – some will adore business as a career, find it exciting and fulfilling, while others will think it the most boring possible thing anyone could ever do! You’d be smart to weigh any comments like these with a grain of salt, knowing how different people can be. )

We also think your comment, “I am the person who likes to do something different all the time, speaks volumes about your personality. Just based on that one observation alone, being a “firefighter would qualify as a much better option for you than many types of finance or business jobs that require a repetitiveness of tasks.

So, take time during your first year or two at college to try different courses. Do take a business course or two, but also try other options to see what possibilities capture your imagination, interest and enthusiasm. You’ll be better off for it.
