I'm preparing to earn a general certificate of secondary education (GCSE), as I want to be a solicitor. I don't know what courses to take and I've been told that I need to study history. I don’t want to do that, but I will if I have to.

Daniel's advice

The best way to determine what courses you need to take is to talk to someone at the colleges you think you'd like to attend. Check with at least three schools to see what curriculum is necessary for pursuing a degree in law. You may be able to do this online, depending on the school. In addition, a list of colleges and universities in the U.K. that offer degrees in law is available online at the U.K. Center for Legal Education.

Next, talk to people who perform the job you think you want to do after completing your education. Identify at least five lawyers who will discuss their jobs, the schools they attended and the courses they took to get their degrees. This way you'll know what the reality of the job is, which will help you decide if you really want to pursue this career.

If you find that history is an integral part of this course of study, and you don't like it, you may want to re-examine why you think a career in law is right for you.
