I'm studying Spanish and management at University College London, but want to change my concentration because I don't like the courses I'm taking. My goal is to earn a generous income by working in the international marketing or publishing side of the music industry. I speak English and French fluently and have a good understanding of Spanish.

Next year I plan on studying business finance at Durham University or European business at Portsmouth University. Which choice would best position me for achieving my goal? Also, which extracurricular activities should I participate in?

Frances's advice

If you want to pursue a career in the music industry, you need to find out which universities have programs in this area. The ones you mention don't seem to relate to the field you desire.

We suggest you talk with executives who work at music-publishing houses and record companies to find out what kind of education they received. Also, determine what their jobs really entail to get an accurate and complete picture of the business.

It worries us that you cite earning a generous income as a goal rather than pursuing a career that you're passionate about. If you don't love this business, it's unlikely that you'll become successful in it. Our experience shows us that when money is the only or strongest reason for pursuing a given career, it isn’t enough in the long haul. Follow your heart and mind and not your wallet. Your chances at being a real success will improve dramatically. This also applies to your decision about extracurricular activities. Do what you enjoy and your real potential will show.
