I'm studying for a master's degree in marketing and finance at the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi, Pakistan. I graduate in December and intend to find a job abroad, preferably in the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates or Hong Kong -- in that order of preference. I've completed several internships, including stints with International Business Machines Corp. and the World Conservation Union. I've also worked in the media and as a free-lance consultant for small businesses. Is it advisable to seek a job in the countries of my choice? If so, how should I proceed?

Frances's advice

Based on our experience, the people who are happiest in their careers and life in general are those who set goals and pursue them with passion and integrity. If you desire to better yourself so you can help others, of course you should proceed with your plans. It's vitally important that you give serious thought to why you want to relocate and what you see as your long-term life goals. Is this move a way to gain experience somewhere else or run away from something? Do you think you'll gain riches in another country that aren't available at home? Or, do you think that the only way to be successful is to have international experience? Whatever your reasons, be clear about them and honest so you never regret the decision you make now.

Your experience and education are certainly diverse enough to garner interest from employers. We think your biggest hurdle will be in trying to secure a work permit. Check with the embassies of your target countries to find out the exact requirements for working in each. It also would be wise to contact an attorney specializing in immigration issues to make sure you cover all bases.

Use your contacts from your internships to see if there are job opportunities at those employers, which likely have offices in the locations you're considering. If you can find an employer willing to sponsor you, you'll have overcome 99% of the difficulty in obtaining the needed papers.
