I got promoted to a line job where I have five managers that report to me and they coordinate the work of 120 persons. At first pleased, I now realize that I'm not a line person -- I lack authority, hate giving orders and can't stand being in control. I'm best suited as a staff person. Needless to say, my results are mediocre and my morale is low. I fear that if I don't take steps soon, I'm going to lose my job.

Daniel's advice

You're right to be concerned. This situation is serious and no doubt preoccupies your mind and drains your energy. Take immediate steps to work out a solution.

First, you'd be wise to hire a good management coach. It will cost money, but will help you sort out strategies to keep your present work from deteriorating further. Work together to find short-term solutions to your everyday management duties. While no coach can change the basic structure of your personality, your goal should be to prevent a catastrophe from occurring that would make this situation unsalvageable.

If you're uncertain how to find a coach, ask people you know for recommendations. Then interview several to clarify the type of service they offer, the number of sessions you might need, the type of process they use and how much they charge. Selecting a coach that fits your needs may take time, but will be worthwhile if it leads to a relationship that helps you solve your current problem. Many coaching relationships take place over the phone, so you don't have to limit your search to your geographical area.

After you feel that your ship is on a steady course, you'll have to talk to your boss. Perhaps you can find out the reasons you were promoted and his or her long-term plans for you. If you're expected to be in this job for a long period, you'll have to suggest other options. Explain that you're concerned for the results of your division and don't want anything to hamper the image of the overall company, your boss or yourself. It's never easy to admit that one isn't suited for a particular job, but it does happen.

You'll need to be creative in working out a solution, but if you're a valuable employee your boss will work with you to help make sure you land in the kind of job that best utilizes your skills and abilities.
