Recruitment agencies generally serve employers, not candidates. Instead of pursuing them, research companies that interest you on the Internet. Visit their sites and look up their employment opportunities. Become familiar with the jargon and industry-specific words each company uses, so you'll sound knowledgeable when you write and talk to them. Then mail a well-crafted letter to a specific person, and don't include your resume. Write about your interest in the company and mention a time you'll call to follow up. When you make the call, try to secure an interview. A few companies may turn you down, but the more you do this, the more comfortable you'll become, and eventually you'll succeed.
Also, take advantage of your network of contacts. Since entry- and mid-level jobs are more abundant than the senior positions most agencies recruit for, they'll likely be able to help you secure the kind of leads you're interested in.
