I've got a master in mechanical engineering and an MBA from one of the leading European Business schools. In the past I implemented ERP's as IT consultant. Actually I'm managing a business unit in the manufacturing industry, exporting machine components worldwide. Now I'm interested in a new challenge outside good old Europe. How can I find offerings and build serious contacts in the Gulf region, mainly the UAE, where I expect strong economical movement in the future? What do I need to consider when investigating offers in the region?

Daniel's advice

You should start off by making a list of all the companies in the United Arab Emirates who are already customers for the machine components you currently export or machine components similar to the ones you export – include your competitors to be sure you generate the largest list you can.

Next find ways to meet people in Zurich who already do business within the UAE. Begin by finding one person who has a contact there, and then ask him/her for another person you can talk with for more information. Keep on with this process until you have generated a lengthy list of people who are familiar with someone or some company in the UAE. Ask each person you meet what the ten most common challenges are and the 5 biggest problems that need addressing in the area of business you seek to bring to them. When you find an area or two that matches your expertise, you will be ready to begin approaching possible companies with your proposals.

When making any move from country to country there are factors to consider; work permit issues, the cost of living, cultural differences, etc. You will need to find out as much as possible before moving to know if the conditions you will find in this new location will be acceptable to you. Probably the easiest way to make this kind of transition is to find a European company with a presence in the UAE already and work for them. This makes it easier to deal with issues of permits/visas and also allows for a move back to your old location if you find the new situation unacceptable or unworkable.

Use the list you generated from the above exercise and contact each company with your newly researched ideas and see if you can get an offer to work for them. As stated earlier, having an established company who is willing to sponsor you lessens the hurdles you will face since flying solo will make it a more difficult process to secure the needed work/entry visas.
