I learned that a job I want in my current company will open soon and I'd like to apply for it. Should I wait for an ad to be put in the paper or should I act now before others have a chance to apply?

Frances's advice

In most cases, waiting to be one of many applicants isn't the best way to give yourself the upper hand in a hiring situation. You should contact immediately the key recruiter for the job and let him or her know that you're interested. This can be done informally, which will allow you to determine if you have a realistic chance at the job. Look for clues to gauge if this individual is willing to help you gain an advantage. If the recruiter suggests that you apply before others have the chance, it's a good sign. If you're told to wait until the ad comes out and apply like everyone else, it's probably a sign that you won't be given favored treatment, even though you're an employee. When you feel reasonably certain that you have at least a 75% chance of getting the job, make your move. If you don't feel confident, reconsider your strategy.

If you apply for the job and are turned down, it could cause you embarrassment or discomfort in the future. We're big believers that to gain, one must be willing to take risks. Just be careful that the risks you take are informed and reasonable. There's no advantage in jeopardizing your current job and workplace happiness if the possibility for you to move to this new job opportunity doesn't really exist.
